3 Tips for Driving in the Rain

Driving in the rain makes things trickier, but by following a few tips, you can ensure you arrive at your destination safely.

1. Turn On the Headlights

In many states, turning on your headlights when it’s raining is the law. Even if it isn’t the law in your state, you should do so because it helps increase visibility. Whether there’s a downpour or just a light sprinkle outside, the rain will decrease your visibility and ability to see other cars or obstacles on the road. Simply turning on your headlights not only helps you to see better, but it also helps other drivers see you better.

2. Slow Down

It’s a good idea to drive more slowly when it’s raining. Wet roads can be slippery and dangerous and cause you to hydroplane. Hydroplaning happens when your tires lose traction due to excess water on the road. When hydroplaning, you lose control of your vehicle as it glides over the water. By driving at a reduced speed, you’ll be less likely to hydroplane. However, if you do hydroplane, let off the gas slowly and steer straight to regain control of your vehicle.

3. Use Your Windshield Wipers

If you can’t see clearly, you can drive safely. Turn on your windshield wipers to give you a clear view out of the windshield. To have an even clearer view, use a specialized product that can be sprayed or wiped onto your windshield that will help defer rainwater from collecting.
